Blepharitis is an inflammatory condition that affects the eyelid margins. The eyelids play an important role in protecting the surface of your eyes and spreading tears each time you blink. Inflammation around the eyelid edges can disrupt that process and may also affect the meibomian glands, which produce the oily layer of your tears.
Blepharitis can be persistent or recurring, and some patients experience it alongside dry eye disease or meibomian gland dysfunction.
Blepharitis symptoms can vary depending on which parts of the eyelid are affected and whether other dry eye factors are present. You may notice:
Some patients may also notice irritation along the eyelid edges, dry or flaky eyelid skin, or debris around the eyelashes. These symptoms are not specific to blepharitis. Allergies, dry eye, ocular rosacea, infections, and other conditions can produce similar complaints.
Blepharitis does not always have one single cause. Several factors can contribute to inflammation around the eyelids, including changes in the natural oils and bacteria around the eyelid margins, problems with the meibomian glands, skin conditions, and ocular rosacea. The condition is often described by where the inflammation occurs.
Anterior blepharitis affects the outer front edge of the eyelid near the eyelashes. It may be associated with irritation, flaky debris, or changes along the lash line.
Posterior blepharitis affects the inner eyelid margin where the meibomian glands open. When these glands are inflamed or fail to produce healthy oils properly, the tear film may become less stable.
Blepharitis treatment depends on where the inflammation is occurring, what appears to be contributing to it, and whether conditions such as dry eye or meibomian gland dysfunction are present at the same time.

The medication your eye doctor recommends depends on your examination findings, symptoms, and overall eye health. Prescription treatment is not the same for every patient, and it may be combined with eyelid care or other therapies when appropriate.
Blepharitis can sometimes occur alongside meibomian gland dysfunction, which affects the oil-producing glands within the eyelids.
