OptiLight® IPL for Dry Eye

More Than Symptom Relief

What Is IPL Treatment for Dry Eye?

IPL stands for intense pulsed light. The technology delivers controlled pulses of broad-spectrum light to the area below and around the eyes. OptiLight® was developed specifically for dry eye management related to meibomian gland dysfunction. In the United States, it is FDA-approved for improving signs of dry eye disease due to MGD in appropriate patients aged 22 and older.

The goal of treatment is not simply to add moisture to the eyes. IPL is used to address inflammation associated with MGD and support a healthier environment for the meibomian glands and tear film.

How Does Lumenis OptiLight® Help Dry Eye?

The meibomian glands sit inside your eyelids and produce the oily layer of your tears. When the glands are not working properly, tears may evaporate too quickly. Inflammation around the eyelids can add to the problem and contribute to a cycle of irritation and tear-film instability.

OptiLight® uses controlled light energy as part of treatment for this inflammatory, gland-related form of dry eye. Clinical research cited by Lumenis has evaluated effects including reduced inflammatory markers, improved tear break-up time, and changes in meibomian gland function.

Who May Be a Candidate for OptiLight®?

IPL is not intended for every type of dry eye. Your eye doctor may consider OptiLight® when your evaluation shows that meibomian gland dysfunction and related inflammation are contributing to your dry eye.

A potential candidate may have:

  • Persistent dry eye related to MGD
  • Tears that evaporate too quickly
  • Meibomian glands that are not functioning normally
  • Ongoing eyelid or ocular-surface inflammation
  • Symptoms that have continued despite basic dry eye care
  • Overlapping conditions such as ocular rosacea when clinically relevant

Your optometrist will examine your eyelids, tear film, ocular surface, meibomian glands, medical history, and other relevant factors before deciding whether IPL is appropriate for your care plan.

OptiLight® Treatment: what to Expect

OptiLight® treatment is performed in our Scottsdale Dry Eye Center. Before treatment begins, your provider reviews the treatment area and takes the appropriate steps to protect your eyes.

Controlled pulses of light are applied to the treatment area using the OptiLight® handpiece. A typical session takes about 15 minutes.

The standard protocol consists of four treatment sessions. Your eye doctor will explain the timing of your visits and whether any additional dry eye therapies should be used alongside IPL.
